See, DirecTV and TiVo don’t get along any more. DirecTV sells its own DVRs, and all the reports I read online said these non-TiVo models were pretty bad. DirecTV acknowledges the chips will save it a lot of money. EchoStar also plans to use the chips, which were originally developed by RF Magic, which Entropic bought last year for an undisclosed price. Videocon plans to spend more than Rs 150 crore on brand and service communication of its direct-to-home service, D2H+, according to its Director Saurabh Dhoot. Tata Sky is not listed and would not share or comment on its ad and marketing spends but is believed to spend just as much if not more. Video is a key part of AT&T’s strategy. The company has spent millions of dollars over the past few years to upgrade its network with fiber so that it can deliver TV over its IP network.

TiVo was/is unwilling to license its software unbranded. Tivo allows customers to records hours of television without needing a VHS tape or DVD burner. For the time being some customers are buying a separate Tivo unit and hooking it into their current Directv HD receiver, unfortunately sacrificing some picture quality along the way. TiVo just skips right over them! You can also skip commercials when you rewind.
